We all know that the fuel that you put into your body affects how you feel and function. But food also fuels your hair growth! Hair is made up of strands of protein called keratin. Keratin is a protein that slowly hardens to create hair, skin, and nails in a process called keritinization. High-protein diets cause more proteins to be available for keratinization, and can therefore actually produce thicker hair!
The downside to this, of course, is that if you suddenly change from a diet high in protein to a lower-protein diet, you may see some change in the thickness of your hair. I went vegetarian about ten years ago. Quite honestly, I don’t remember if removing meat from my diet caused my hair to grow any thinner. But, if someone comes to me complaining about hair loss and no change to their hair routine, I will often ask if they have recently gone vegetarian or vegan. If you’re considering taking the leap to a plant-based diet, make sure to add beans, tofu, and nuts into your diet to prevent any hair loss! And make sure you share your favorite plant-based-recipie with me!
